1. Dijon
Stay
About the destination: Dijon is the capital of the eastern French region of Burgundy. Dijon is perhaps best known for its mustard, which is still produced locally, but it is also one of the most beautiful cities in France, and its historic buildings and byways were not heavily damaged by bombing in World War II and are largely intact.Dijon was for some time the capital of the Dukes of Burgundy. The dukes were great patrons of the arts, so Dijon was a major center of Gothic and early Renaissance music, painting, and sculpture, attracting some of the greatest and most famous artists and musicians from Flanders in particular. The music the great composers left behind can be performed anywhere, but it is particularly in the fields of sculpture and architecture that masters left a lasting mark on Dijon.Today, Dijon is a cosmopolitan city, with universities in the center and industrial plants on the outskirts. Traffic is restricted in the center of the city, so many parts of central Dijon are quiet and relaxing. While perhaps not an ideal city for a whole holiday, it’s definitely worth a day trip.

About the destination: Bastia is the lively and cultural city in Corsica as well as its business and financial centre. It was the capital of the Genoese administration of Corsica until the mid-18th century. It has preserved the architecture and atmosphere of that time, and has a rugged, unrefined charm. There are many things to explore like the 15th century Oratoire St.Roch with a rich Baroque interior and a fantastic organ or Corsica's largest church, the 17th century Saint-Jean Baptiste cathedral. In the nearby Place du Marche, there is a flea market every weekend. The area surrounding the Citadelle, Terra Nova neighbourhood, is one of the most colourful parts of town. Just take time to wonder around its restored houses and mansions. Stroll around the Palace of the Governors once grand gardens, Jardin Romieu, from where you can enjoy a view of the Vieux Port, the Old Port. The Vieux Port is a wonderful part of the city, with tall, faded buildings surrounding a marina with posh yachts. Corsica’s most successful commercial town is a lively and charming place with a wonderful port, interesting architecture, good restaurants and many cultural events. About the destination: Alghero is one of Sardinia’s most beautiful cities. Due to its gorgeous beaches it has become a very popular holiday resort with herds of tourist arriving every summer. Yet it has managed to keep its unique character and its charming atmosphere. The narrow streets of the old city, named Barcelonetta due to the island’s Catalan past, are crowded on the peninsula surrounded by a fortified bastion. Walking through this medieval world, visitors will discover the striking cathedral, built in the 16th century in Catalan-Gothic style. The church of San Francesco has a beautiful Gothic interior and a small golden cloister. From the cute little fishing port, below the city walls, boats depart towards the Grotta di Nettuno or Neptune's Caves, one of the island’s most spectacular attractions. But undoubtedly the main attraction of Alghero is wandering around its streets, discovering its charming spots while contemplating the sunset that bathes the Mediterranean in warm glowing light.

About the destination: The Cinque Terre (Italian pronunciation: [ˈtʃiŋkwe ˈtɛrre]; Ligurian: Çinque Tære, meaning "Five Lands") is a rugged portion of coast on the Italian Riviera. It is in the Liguria region of Italy, to the west of the city of La Spezia, and comprises five villages: Monterosso al Mare, Vernazza, Corniglia, Manarola, and Riomaggiore. The coastline, the five villages, and the surrounding hillsides are all part of the Cinque Terre National Park and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Over the centuries, people have carefully built terraces on the rugged, steep landscape right up to the cliffs that overlook the sea. Part of its charm is the lack of visible corporate development. Paths, trains and boats connect the villages, and cars cannot reach them from the outside. The Cinque Terre area is a very popular tourist destination. The villages of the Cinque Terre were severely affected by torrential rains which caused floods and mudslides on October 25, 2011. Nine people were confirmed killed by the floods, and damage to the villages, particularly Vernazza and Monterosso al Mare, was extensive

14. Strasbourg
Stay
About the destination: Poised right on the German border, sophisticated Strasbourg has been shuffled back and forth between Germany and France for centuries. Today it is a symbol of reconciliation between nations. In 1955 it was chosen the seat of the European Parliament. Cosmopolitan Strasbourg nonetheless remains thoroughly Alsatian in appearance, with its half-timbered houses, covered bridges and flower-lined canals. Start a tour at the mesmerising Gothic cathedral, whose light, open spire rises above the historic core of the city. While you wait for the delightful play of the horloge astronomique, astrological clock, be sure to see the Pilier des Anges, one of the high points of Gothic sculpture. Across from the cathedral are the elegant 18th Château des Rohan, housing a porcelain, archaeology, and fine arts museum and the Maison de l’Oeuvre Notre-Dame, a huge collection of medieval and Renaissance art. For folklore, visit the Musée Alsacien. During the summer, there are folklore and music programs, and a walk along the quays of La Petite France, the old quarter, is best on a warm summer night. Get a taste of the delicious Alsatian cuisine in one of the many riverside restaurants.
